Book Review: Little Fires Everywhere - Celeste Ng

Book Review: Little Fires Everywhere - Celeste Ng

There are two worlds in this book.

The shiny, lavish lives of the Richardsons’ with their version of the American Dream, a lovely house with lovely blue-eyed children. Everything looks perfect from the outside. except Isabelle, the youngest daughter, who was everything her mother didn’t want her to be. Curious and rebellious, she took to the newly hired help, Mia Warren, a single mother, an artist who doubled as a housekeeper in the Richardsons’ house.

The second world in the book is that of Mia Warren, with her daughter Pearl. Pearl, like any underprivileged teenager in a new town, wanted very desperately to belong. She also had an eye out for the handsome Richardson son, Trip and began to emulate the style of Lexie, the oldest daughter.

I would not spoil the book for you but much of the story’s appeal is its contrast between the two worlds of the Richardsons and the Warrens. The have and the have-nots, though by the end of the book you might begin to question which is which.
